Cyrus' debut album, Southern Style, produced by T.G. Sheppard, was released in 1991.[16] It was a moderate commercial success, peaking at #42 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.[17] He followed it with the albums A Better Man (1994)[18] and The Greatest Hits (1996).[19]
He is also a prolific songwriter, having written songs for other country musicians.[28] He has written a total of eight Number One singles on the Billboard country chart, including two of his own.[29][30] Cyrus won his first and only Academy of Country Music Award for Song of the Year in 2002, and has won a total of 14 ACM awards, including the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award in 2005.
The first single from The Road I've Traveled, Mama's, Mama's, Mama's reached Number One on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock charts, becoming his second Number One song on the latter. It also became the second-most played song on country radio in 2000, with 185 airplay spins.[18]

The album reached Number One on both the Billboard Top Country Albums and Billboard 200 charts, and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA. It was awarded Country Album of the Year by the CMA, CMMA and ACM. The album was also awarded Double Platinum certification by the RIAA for sales of over 2 million copies in the U.S. alone.[17]
In 1999, Cyrus released Achy Breaky Heart, which remained on the Billboard 200 Top Country Albums chart for 29 weeks and was certified platinum in the U.S.[14] The album was awarded Country Album of the Year by both the CMA and ACM.[15][16]
