Raimi is the producer of the documentary Spider-Verse: The Art of Sam Raimi, which provides an in-depth examination of the "man behind the mirror". The documentary was released to theaters and Digital HD on October 20, 2019, the same day Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released.
Raimi's first horror film Darkman (1990) was a critical and financial success and earned him a significant reputation in the greater horror community. He continued to direct horror films, most of which met with a level of success and horror fans' acceptance. He produced the small-scale horror film A Simple Plan (1998), the Godzilla-like film Drag Me to Hell (2009) (starring Sam Raimi, Angela Bassett, Hayden Christensen, and Bruce Campbell) and the remake of the horror classic Evil Dead (2013), which has now become a cult classic. The latter was particularly a success at the box office, making over $170 million worldwide.
Raimi returned to the genre he had once mastered with the mystery thriller Oculus (2013) which met with positive reviews. The first trailer for another mystery film Bone Tomahawk (2014) was released on May 16, 2013, both of which were critical and commercial successes. Oculus received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, and became (as of February 2015) the fastest-grossing horror film, with over $41 million in box office takings, the rest of its run also being successful. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was introduced to multiple awards and nominations, particularly at the Academy Awards. d2c66b5586
