THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will crack down on the illegal sale of imported frozen fish in wet markets starting in December amid the proliferation of imported frozen fish such as pompano, salmon and squid in the wet markets.\r\r \r\rBFAR Assistant Director for Administrative and Other Support Services Zaldy Perez said the directive stemmed from an inspection conducted on Thursday at the Commonwealth Market in Quezon City where frozen imported pampano, salmon and squid were being sold.\r\r \r\rPerez said imported frozen pampano and salmon are only allowed for \"industrial use\" or in places such as restaurants and hotels.\r\r \r\r\"Based on our inspection, the vendors said they are not aware that the imported fish commodities should not be sold in the wet markets so BFAR is now conducting an intensified information drive to tell the vendors that these are not legitimate in the public market,\" Perez said.\r\r \r\rPerez added that the information drive of BFAR in 21 wet markets in Metro Manila will continue until December 3.\r\r \r\r\"We started our information drive in 21 public markets in the NCR [National Capital Region] and will end on December 3. We will start confiscating imported fish on December 4,\" he added.\r\r \r\rAccording to Perez, aside from confiscation, vendors and the source of the imported fish could face administrative and criminal charges.\r\r \r\r\"If there is connivance between the vendors and the importers, they can be fined and be charged with both administrative and criminal charges,\" he said.\r\r \r\rAt the same time, Perez said that vendors should be able to present import permits for round scad, bigeye scad, mackerel, bonito and moonfish to prove that these are part of the 25,000 metric tons of imported fish allowed by the Department of Agriculture (DA).\r\r \r\r\"If the vendors fail to present local transport permits, it means the frozen imported fish is not allowed to be sold in the wet market,\" Perez added.\r\r \r\rAgriculture Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban had issued Special Order Number 1002 allowing the 25,000 metric tons of frozen round scad, bigeye scad, mackerel, bonito and moonfish amid the implementation of closed fishing season from Nov. 1, 2022 to Jan. 31, 2023.","article_custom_fields":"{\"\":[\"\"],\"seo_meta_keywords\":[\"\"],\"seo_meta_description\":[\"\"],\"seo_meta_title\":[\"\"],\"sponsored_flag\":[\"\"],\"offer_flag\":[\"\"],\"featured_article_flag\":[\"\"],\"drupal_json\":[\"{\\\"type\\\":null,\\\"properties\\\":{\\\"PUBLISHED\\\":0,\\\"PROMOTED\\\":0,\\\"STICKY\\\":0},\\\"fields\\\":[]}\"],\"wp_custom_json\":[\"{\\\"type\\\":\\\"\\\",\\\"fields\\\":[]}\"],\"article_tags\":[\"\"],\"show_image\":[\"off\"],\"Disable_Ad\":[\"off\"],\"disable_player\":[\"off\"],\"column\":[\"\"],\"kicker\":[\"\"],\"edel\":[\"\"],\"delu\":[\"\"],\"delt\":[\"Read this in The Manila Times digital edition.\"],\"premium\":[\"off\"],\"Redirect_URL\":[\"\"],\"page_number\":\"0\",\"initial_publication\":\"\",\"date_created\":\"2022-11-24 11:00:58\",\"date_modified\":\"2022-12-01 10:29:10\",\"last_modified_user\":\"Edumar Madlangbayan\",\"section_color\":\"\",\"target_page\":\"0\",\"cxense_metatags\":null}","cms_type":"live","author_id":2554,"section_id":10,"seo_meta_keywords":"Govt,to,crack,down,on,imported,frozen,fish,sold,in,wet,markets","seo_meta_description":"Govt to crack down on imported frozen fish sold in wet markets","seo_meta_title":"Govt to crack down on imported frozen fish sold in wet markets","publish_time":"2022-11-24 11:00:00","related_articles_ids":"","article_tags":"","sub_section_id":0,"visit_count":800,"sponsored_flag":0,"offer_flag":0,"featured_article_flag":0,"media_gallery_flag":0,"video_gallery_flag":0,"highlight_flag":0,"top_story_flag":0,"is_updated":0,"is_old_article":0,"old_article_id":0,"article_byline":"Bella Cariaso","ts":"2022-12-04 11:11:22","last_edited":"2022-12-01 10:29:10","alt_publish_time":"2022-11-24 11:03:45","image_path":"{\\\"image_path\\\":\\\"manilatimes\\\\\/uploads\\\\\/images\\\\\/2022\\\\\/11\\\\\/24\\\\\/129585.jpg\\\",\\\"cms_type\\\":\\\"live\\\",\\\"small_image\\\":\\\"\\\",\\\"is_updated\\\":\\\"0\\\",\\\"image_cropping\\\":\\\"{\\\\\\\"original_image\\\\\\\":{\\\\\\\"image_original_width\\\\\\\":1200,\\\\\\\"image_original_height\\\\\\\":800,\\\\\\\"icd_image_type\\\\\\\":\\\\\\\"original_image\\\\\\\"}}\\\",\\\"is_copied\\\":\\\"0\\\",\\\"media_type\\\":\\\"0\\\",\\\"image_caption\\\":\\\"Photo shows fish and marine products sold inside the wet section at the Farmers Market in Cubao, Quezon City.
