I sit down with Belgian freediving legend and 3-time world record holder Fred Buyle to discuss how freediving has impacted his life. We explore his highlights, inspirations, advice, and plans for the future.
Imagine if the one thing you cannot think about is the exact thing that your life, literally, depended on. That's precisely the relationship that veteran freediver Fred Buyle has with time and breath during his decade-long pursuit of underwater world records.
Born in Belgium, Buyle began diving at the age of four- for him, being underwater is as natural as breathing. But not breathing was what he had to refine and perfect when he immersed himself in the sport professionally at the age of 20. \"That's when I decided to do competition and set records.\"
And that's exactly what he did. Aside from three world records in the variable-weight and the constant-weight freediving categories, Buyle became the eighth person to reach 100-metres underwater in a single breath in 1999.
Belugas are highly sociable and, without a pod, he began seeking out human contact. I spent several days in the water with him as we put together a cross-discipline study of his communication abilities, recording his response to sounds. It was difficult work with the below-freezing temperatures and low light, but he was extremely upset whenever we tried to leave.
The one-bedroom, one-bathroom listing advertises linens, shampoo, and breakfast, and allows \"other pets\" (which we'll assume are the sharks.) House rules include, \"No selfies after dark, no sleepwalking or night swimming,\" and \"keep your heads and feet in the bedroom at all times.\" (Even though the property description explains that sharks are kinder than you think, night swimming is really not worth the risk.) Your stay will also include an aquarium tour by Fred Buyle, \"a world record-breaking freediver, underwater photographer, and shark enthusiast,\" according to the listing.
We record high frequency (100 Hz; 100 measurements per second), 3D acceleration, gyro and magnetic heading, speed, depth and temperature. Moreover, when the shark surfaces for less than a second, its GPS position is recorded. We also collect the HD video with red lights in the camera tag version. We are interested in the vertical and horizontal behaviours, feeding and social interactions and energy use, based on the tail beats and speed essentially.
In the women's category, Zecchini holds the world record of 113 meters of Constant Weight Apnea (CWA) and 250 meters of Dynamic Apnea (CMAS), which has won 16 gold medals at the World Championships and has set its name to 25 world records in almost all disciplines of freediving. The young athlete keeps exploring as the modern Ulysse with the Ulysse Nardin Lady Diver on her wrist.
Right now you can enter to win a two nights stay at this very unique underwater room, with 360 degree views of the L'Aquarium de Paris, specifically the Shark Aquarium. And that's not all, according to the Contemporist: \"Fred Buyle, a world record-breaking freediver, underwater photographer, and shark enthusiast is the host, and he along with a marine biologist, will take you on a tour of the aquarium and give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of sharks.\"
Three nights are on offer for three lucky winners and a friend, who will be hosted at the Aquarium by world record-breaking freediver and shark conservationist Fred Buyle, who will give them a guided tour of their home for the night.
With an impressive list of achievements to his name across all board sports, Caiz-ergues currently holds the World Sailing Speed Kitesurfing record, with a run averaging 107.3 km/h, or 57.98 knots (over 500m). He is the first to surpass 100 km/h on the water by sail power.
Free diving has another big advantage. It is totally silent, allowing Mr. Schnöller and Mr. Buyle to record a clear audio signal of whale vocalizations. The team began shooting video, including from 360 degrees, of their encounters.
DareWin has collected and made publicly available more of this footage than any scientific institution or university. The group has built audio and video rigs and software systems that will allow researchers to record their encounters and see all the whales in a pod at all times, which should help them determine who is clicking to whom, and how each whale responds.
I love AIDA because I know its purpose. From the beginning, it was made by freedivers for freedivers. It has always excelled in democracy, and justice and acts decisively in the development of the sport. Without AIDA, we would not have evolved. AIDA is a pioneer in teaching, competition rules, records, and safety. I am very proud to be part of this world. 59ce067264
